Red's Meadow Resupply

I am planning on re-supplying at Red’s Meadows. I understand you cannot send a package there, is that true? I am trying ro decide i I should just buy stuff there or send a resupply package general delivery to Mammoth Lakes Post Office. Does anyone know what the supplies are like at Red’s? Is it difficult to get from Red’s to Mammouth Lakes?

You can send a package to Reds Meadow.

Last year the store had a small selection of Mountain House freeze dried food along with standard oatmeal, beef jerky, packaged trail mix, etc. Given their shipping and storage charges, it would be cheaper to supply out of the store (if you aren’t particular).

You can also take the shuttle bus (there’s a fee each way) to the ski area. Hitching a ride into town is fairly easy or I have heard that you can catch a mountain bike shuttle. There is a full service grocery store plus plenty of lodging/restaurant options once in town.

As well as the minimal supplies at the store, you might want too check out the two hiker boxes: one in the cafe and one back at the Red’s Meadow Campground. Especially if you’re hiking in late season, you could get a lot of free goodies from those.

Thanks for the advice! I will send myself a package and check the hiker boxes.

Last year the store was very well stocked when I went through (mid August…I was SoBo sectioning). And getting to Mammoth is pretty easy, the bus runs just about every 30 minutes throughout the day if I remember correctly. I think it was $8/person each way. If you’re going northbound, Tuolumne Meadows is only about 35 miles and you can send a package there as well as it has pretty good resupply. Happy hiking!

I don’t believe you have to pay both ways on the bus. On the way out, the bus will stop at the ranger station where you pay for your park pass. The pass will be good until you return to the backcountry. If the bus doesn’t stop there, you’ll have to purchase a pass on your way back into the park.

I’ve done this twice now and both times just paid for a single pass.

Mammoth has some good restaurants and is fairly easy to get to by the bus. If you’re hiking the whole JMT and you have the time, its a nice little break to resupply, shower, etc…

I usually pop into town and stay at the motel 6 before heading out in the morning. You have to hike to the shopping mall at the top of town to catch the Mountain Bike bus to mammoth reasort on the way back but its all very doable.:cheers

If & when I do this trail again (maybe with my daughter next year), I would consider going into Mammoth for resupply. Why you ask? The resupply at Reds was $25 + postage (another $10-$15). That’s about what a resupply out of Mammoth would cost - in total. Plus, I’d get to see Mammoth (variety is ALWAYS good), and buy stuff that seemed palatable at the moment. I tire of food on the trail quickly, and am always looking for variety.
