Ok, I’ve been on the other side of this discussion. I was the career wife who totally focused on security. My husband decided to go hiking and I freaked out - at first. But, I supported him and helped him however I could - still freaking out. But once I went hiking with him for two days, I FELL IN LOVE - WITH THE HIKING. I’m now the one that’s hooked and am trying to figure out how we can go again this summer. Spending time with him on the trail was probably the best thing we could have done for our relationship. It changed me in that I have loosened up and am looking for adventure! Plus, we met some great folks that we are still friends with until this day. If she really cares about you, she’ll get her act together.
Have Fun!

sex, would the cities fall apart? Just thinking here. Sex breeds bonding which breeds babies which breeds mortgages all of which breed second second marriage to job, which breeds third marriage to city.

Since you mentioned that you were in your mid-thirties, Im guessing that your girl is around the same age (late twenties/thirties). She is thinking about her biological clock about now. We women cant reproduce forever and if she is marriage and children minded, she wants it to be soon. It is only fair to give her the chance to find what she wants with someone else. Dont even ask her to wait for you. Maybe she will and maybe she wont, but its only fair that if you get to follow your dream, she should have the opportunity to follow hers.

I had no idea you thought I dumped you b/c you wanted to thru-hike?? I thought you dumped me to “lighten your load”…get rid of a few ounces/excess baggage…ie girlfriend with a kid. I agree that I overreacted initially, but I have been doing alot of hiking the past couple months & may have caught the bug myself. I’ve joined AMC & should be doing my first backpacking trip soon. I even read A Walk in the Woods (if that counts for anything)… I am starting to understand why you are so excited to do this next year. At first I thought it was a little crazy, but I get it now… I am sorry if I was any kind of a burden. Anyway, I wish you luck on your adventures… & I hope you don’t mind if I ask you some questions as far as gear goes… Again, I’m sorry
