Rent a car, Durango to Denver

We should arrive in Durango sometime between July 23rd and July 28th, depending on how many 14er detours we take. We were thinking about renting a car and driving back to Denver. The AVIS website says it would be about $150 for the one day rental. Has anybody tried this? Better yet, is there anybody that will finish about the same time that wants to split the cost?

Check Priceline.com or other online travel sites, Budget, Enterprise and Hertz have rates under $100.

MAKE SURE they have divulged ALL costs. “Drop” off charges can be astronomical, and some charge more or less if at all on mileage.

Hi,

We did this last year, and I don’t remember exactly how much we paid, but $200 sounds familiar. There will be a different location drop off fee, which is a lot. One thing to keep in mind, and something that almost screwed us over, is that Durango doesn’t have much in the way of a car rental business and their fleets aren’t that big, which means that they don’t that many of their cars leave Durango. We got the last car they had, which was one of their expensive ones. So if you know your arrival date in Durango, book as early as possible.

In the end with gas, it would have been cheaper to fly!
