Anyone know of a cheap place that rents canisters for a couple weeks thru the Sierras? Likewise, any former hiker willing to rent me theirs for a few weeks for a small fee? Thanks

at the same place you get the permits at either end of the JMT section. I realize the PCT and the JMT are different paths, but both go through Whitney and Yosemite where canisters are required? and readily available at the park/ranger stations.
Three of us bought our own and two rented…all worked out fine. Actually, except for the extra weight, I kind of liked mine…it packed fine vertically on top of my sleeping bag in my P1 backpack as I recall.
You are welcome to borrow mine, but it might be more convenient to rent one, unless you plan to carry it the entire trip. I have the BearVault which weighs 2 lbs 6 oz.
Personal opinion…we did not have any bear problems, but the stories I heard about the bears that had to be destroyed because hikers did not take measures to protect their food convinced me that all hikers are obligated to do so.
I also bought a whole roll of Tvyek to cut a new ground cloth for a new tent. Let me know if you would like a sheet, and if so, the measurements.
Let me know when and where to mail either or both to you.

The lightest bear barrel is the Bearikade. It comes in two models. Both are available for rent. You pay rent only for the days you are on the trail.
Link is: Bearikade
The following from their website:
“If you planning a trip that is not within a National Park or Forest that carries the Bearikade, we can rent directly from our Santa Ynez, CA office.
Rates are $5 a day for the first 3 days and $2.50 a day for each day thereafter for each Weekender and $6 a day for the first 3 days and $3 a day for each day thereafter for each Expedition.”
