Has anyone replaced the tips on their poles? I haven’t done it and wasn’t sure if there was a trick or if they need to be sent out.

It’s easy. The basket unscrews. Then take a cresent wrentch and narrow the opening of the wrench to the width of the lower pole. Knock off the tip by wacking it off. Insert the new tip. Tamp it down and screw on the new basket. That’s it. Simple. NedtheFed

When you’re at home or in a repair shop, do exactly what Ned says with the crescent wrench. I replaced mine in a motel room once by using part of the bed frame as a sort of reverse slide hammer. Sometimes they pull right off, too, when you’re pulling the baskets off. The official Leki tool is a heavy plastic block with a hole in it that splits apart and bolts over the pole. A good outfitter will have that and will probably let you borrow it.
I replaced mine every 1000 miles or so. They seem to fall apart (the little metal tip breaks off) around then. Depends on how much you mis-use them, though, I bet.

If you are going to be at the PCT kick-off, Leki will most likely have a booth there. They will help you replace the tips for a modest charge.

What Ned the Fed says is true, as is Garlic’s description of the official Leki “weight”. However, just to clarify, whack/tap the wrench with a hammer to release the tip. Also, FYI, never ever squirt any WD40 or such lubricant into the hollow poles. Big mistake! :tongue

I soaked the tips of my poles in hot water for a minute or two then gently twisted the tips out with a set of Vise-grips.
