Reroute of segment 23/24

(In silverton…finally found an internet coffee house…)

Most of you probably already know this, but I have already passed a few CT hikers going north that did not. Segment 23 and 24 has been rerouted for 17 miles and now follows the Continental Divide Trail. The information and maps are on the CTs website. This reroute was a little confusing at the end where it descends to elk creek, but that was partly because of the snow.

This reroute was definitely a good thing. The 17 mile walk along the divide was amazing. My absolute favorite section of the trail by far. I will warn you all though, it increases the elevation gain of segment 23 to almost 5000 ft…lots of climbs.

I think if you really wanted to, you could still do the old route…but you’d be missing out on some breathtaking views.

Was the CDT rerouted to follow the same route as the new segments of the CT?

I was under the impression that both trails were rerouted, but it may have already been the CDT route and they just rerouted the CT along it. Either way, the route goes for 17+ miles along the divide and there are sections where there’s no worn trail yet…just cairns. (which makes me think that it’s new trail for both). I know it’s on the CT website, and probably the CDT’s as well.

The reroute starts near Cataract Lake. The two trails are the same for about 17 miles and then the CDT breaks away and continues along the divide right at point where the CT goes down to Elk Creek.
