Hey anybody know of hikers who had to do their hike in 2 seasons? I'm wanting to know about expectations of getting trail legs back, and mileage etc. Thanks

2 seasons? I'm working on my 15th season. Before resuming your hike take 3-4 months to get your self in shape. You will never be totally ready, but it will help. Start off slow, your feet will be tender and soft. The only way to truly get in shape is to hike, with full gear all day.

Doing it over two seasons is just like starting out. My buddy "Dare" did it over 2000 and 2001. Her Dad died the first year and she got off mid trail to take care of him, his funeral arrangements, etc. She went back the next year and completed her hike, but it took about the same time to get into trail shape as starting out. Of course, she was a lot wiser about what to expect.

Thanks for the helpful comments. I'm bummed that I won't be ready for high mileage through Virginia, but I will be out there.

Hey, if you train for it you can do any millage you want. I started off between 25-30 a day and finished up that way. I started training that January to leave in June.

I find my biggest mistake is hiking at the same pace as when I came off the trail. You need to take it easy until you build back up.

take it from one ol' geezer who's had to learn the hard way....you probably want to work up to 'normal trail mileage' before going afoot again......come to think of it.....this might be a good practice at ANY age!......don't hurt yourself!....at a slower place you can enjoy your surroundings a whole lot more!

It really depends on what you have been doing between the two hikes. Did you have an operation, lie on the beach, gain 50 pounds -- or did you keep on hiking, go to the gym, lose 50 pounds? etc.
I know several people who never hike unless they are on a long hike. I, OTOH, walk every day it’s not pouring rain. It still takes me time to get into trail shape, but not as much.
