Resupply - Arizona Trail

So I’ve made it to Flagstaff (SoBo). The trail has been absolutely amazing and incredibly dry. Light brown cattle tank water has become my best source! I’ve been really impressed with the diversity of the trail.

Can some folks chime in and give me your thoughts on what towns south of Flagstaff would absolutely need a food box sent? I’m not a big food box person and can get by on junk food pretty well. I’m particularly interested in this Roosevelt Lake place. I thought I read something about hitching into Roosevelt (grocery store?) or just send a box to the marina? Any other places I should definitely send a box?

We hitched to Butchers Hook from Roosevelt, it has a small convenience store but I heard that there was a new big grocery store not too far past that. The Butchers Hook place had a (not so great) diner also and a small gas station that sold HEET (and a motel within walking distance). Just south of Flag is the Mormon Lake Lodge which didn’t have much off season (we were early), you might want to call them and check. Way down south Patagonia doesn’t have much choice but you only need a couple of days, you might consider sending yourself a few dinners unless you’re okay with ramen or poor choice in Liptons noodles (it does have a nice little organic food store with lots of fruit and other good stuff). Oh, and there is Collosal Cave mountain park if you don’t want to hitch into Tuscon. Call them first to ask if they still accept packages for hikers. I think they will since they were extremely friendly to me but it’s better to make sure.
Before you hit Roosevelt Lake you could hitch in to Payson which has everything (except a gear store) but we had a difficult time getting a hitch so I don’t really recommend it.

This is a bit out of order but I hope it helps.

Great info from Apple Pie. The only thing I would add is that I thought the Patagonia market was a fine store, but maybe I expected much less and was very pleased with what it was. I was NOBO through Mormon Lake and was pleased with what they had for the short hike to Flag, but I’m not sure how I would like it SOBO. Pine has a new, large grocery.

As far as hitching to Tucson, I recommend yogiing at the Gordon Hibayashi or Molino Basin TH (no water) on the Mt Lemmon Rd. Lots of day hikers and bikers there. There’s a huge Safeway at the start of the Mt Lemmon Rd (about 10 miles down), which is also a very popular meeting point for people heading up Mt Lemmon. But the mail drop at Collosal Cave is a much better option than going into Tucson, if that works.

Only had chips, candy bars, etc when I was there spring 09’. If you can live on junk food it’s alright. I’ve heard they do accept packages for hikers.

Don’t overlook Red Mountain Foods in Patagonia at 376 W Naugle. More of a health-food store type place with a good selection of snacks. It’s across from the public bathrooms in the middle of town.
