Resupply in Bailey and rides to trailhead

My wife and I own the Bailey Country Store, which is located 8 miles from the end of segment 3 where the trail crosses county road 68. We try to keep a good supply of msr fuel, propane, mountain home meals/ pasta sides, as well as various other hiking or camping supplies. We can give you a ride back to the trail after you resupply, and may be able to offer cheap overnight accomodation. Write us for more info

Hello, say our post. Doing my homework for a summer 2014 CT trek. Would like to know more about your services. Thanks for the support.

I stayed at the Bailey store (they have a big basic apartment above the store) last year. They have the supplies mentioned; there is also a gas station a few hundred metres away that has some resupply.

The cafe/diner in Bailey is really good.

I got a shuttle back to the trail which was handy - found it easy enough to hitch down (early morning).

You might consider purchasing denatured alcohol as well. That is a popular fuel for many ultri-lite hikers. You might even sell it by the ounce, where hikers can by 6 oz, as opposed to an entire 6 oz can. Another suggestion might be a “freebie bin” or something of that nature. If hikers come in and want to get rid of goods that another hiker might be able to use, they can leave it in the bin, or on a shelf in the back or something. I’ll be seeing you this summer around July 4th-ish Jim. Maybe I can finish that window upstairs for you if you havent done it already.

Did you guys find it to be a hard hitch into Bailey?? I would love to take this option. Not looking forward to starting out with 7+ days food to get to my first resupply. As I am coming from sea level I know my first few days will be rough. Would like to lighten up any way I can. :girl

We had no problem hitching anywhere along that road. If you go all the way to Kenosha pass, which is a good 4-5 day hike you can just talk to people at the parking lot at the pass. At that point, you can either go to Jefferson or Bailey. We lucked out and made friends with some horseback riders as we were heading to Kenosha that gave us a ride because we stepped off trail and respected their animals.
Always be nice to the horseback riders. They typically have trucks and you can get a ride in the back.

We went to Bailey instead of Jefferson. The Bailey General Store is a good place to try to resupply and there is a great restaurant just across the highway. The name fails me now, but the food rocked. The cafe next door was pretty good too.

I recently e-mailed the store to ask about lodging for a night or two in summer 2015 and received the following reply.

“In the past we’ve been able to offer modest accommodation to hikers off the trail, but the apartment we used for that purpose is now rented full-time. Sorry about that! We still offer our store to re-supply on fuel, water, and food supplies (as well as blister relief!). And if you do choose to do some shopping with us, we can (usually) offer a ride back to the trailhead. Your other option for an overnight is Bailey Lodge (baileylodge.com) which is approx 2.5 miles further down the road from us. You shouldn’t have too much trouble getting a ride down there. Give us a call if you have any other questions: 303-816-9383”
