Resupply in the Whites

I am planning a section hike from Jungle Junction (Inn at the Long Trail) to US 2 in New Hampshire and am wondering how to resupply while in the Whites. I can start off with 3 days food to get to Hanover, then buy enough to get to Glencliff where I can send a package, but then what? What is my next resupply stop assuming I am NOT counting on the hut system. What are my options (that don't require a 10 mile sidetrip)? How much food should I pack out of Glencliff (I want to be as light as possible for this section!!!)?

Thanks in advance,

Bob

Day 1 out of Glencliff, bring 2 snickers bars. That's it. It's up and over Mt Mussie 9 miles to Kinsman Notch. When you get to NH 112 go right .3 to Lost River caves snack bar which closes at 5. Eat up then load up with enough food to last for the 2 days it will take to get up and over Kinsman to Franconia Notch where you go right on US 3, .8 miles to the Flume Visitor Center and either pick up your care package or buy some food in the snack bar. You will need 3 days of food to get to Crawford Notch where you can go right 1.8 miles to Dry River campground to pick up your care package. Get 2 days of food because you will load up at the snack bar on top of Mt Washington. At Pinkham Notch you can load up at the visitor center. You should have 3 days of food to get to Gorham. You can show up at any hut and ask for any cooked food they might have. For 2 or 3 bucks they usually have something.

Francis has the only way to get through this section without a) carrying several days worth of food at a time and b) hitching a few miles into town. The only viable hitch for resupply in that section is the road crossing after Mooselaukee to Woodstock and from Franconia Notch into Lincoln. Both can be crappy hitches to get back from town on. From Glenncliffe the folks at the hostel will shuttle you so you can day hike back from Kinsman notch (for a fee). The huts usually have soup for a dollar and leftovers for a dollar or free depending on the hut and how much they have left.

You can get a ride for 10 bucks with this shuttle to LIncoln from kinsman or franconia notch. 603-745-3140 or 800-545-3140. I stayed at Chet's hostel in Lincoln for a donation. Get more details from Phatt chapp at the glen cliff hostel. I don't know if chet is there this year but I was there last June.
