Resupply in VA - Appalachian Trail

#1

Seems like there are a couple of long stretches in southern/central VA between resupply points. I’d love to hear from previous thru-hikers as to the best resupply points & good, easy spots to get off the trail.

I can’t think of any place along the entire AT that a person has to go more than about 70 miles between places that you could get some kind of food to get to the next place for more food. That “some kind of food” might be at a convenience store or a hostel, but you can be creative enough to get by.

I think most people could carry enough food for 70 miles.

I agree with Stumpknocker here. No worries in VA… MANY good ressuply stops and it seems often that you run into points of ressuply that are not mentioned in any AT guidebooks. Take a look at “Baltimore Jacks” ressuply info over on WhiteBalze, it migh give you some insight and the info your looking for. If you carry 5-6 days of food you’ll be fine. Some lenghts of the VA trail you can get away with 2 days worth between ressuply.

wellllll…i suppose central VA would be the LEAST ‘easy’ in terms of finding a ‘buffet’ or ‘pizza joint’ right off the trail… (from daleville to montebello’s fish hatchery road/dutch haus, the pickin’s are pretty slim, if you don’t wanna hitch into town)…we always found big island or glasgow to be a difficult place to get into town (or the campground), unless you had a cell phone and could call del schecterly or some other 'angel’for a shuttle…the campground was great for us though and had plenty of good food…in the shenandoah’s food is easily accessible if you wanna PAY $$$$$! (but who can resist a burger and blackberry shake at big meadows???)…blackburn trail center usually feeds hikers as does bear’s den, i think…rusty always has lots of snacks and sodas in his spring house (if you want to walk over there from the maupin field shelter (we LOVED rusty’s)…DO make that short run into catawba!..the little grocery makes sandwiches, AND…if it’s thursday-sunday, you’ve got the ‘HOMEPLACE’ restaurant! w’hoo!..actually, paw and i experienced quite a bit of ‘magic’ in VA…but don’t count on it! (or else the magic loses it’s magic!)

Maw-ee mentioned the Daleville-to-Montbello run, one of two 100-mile sections I did on my AT hike. I didn’t feel like hitching in VA and there was no need. That 100 miles isn’t that hard, and it’s a nice hike. Both Daleville and Montbello have grocery stores.

I remember that jaunt, and that wonderful grocery store at the end of it…the fish hatchery had signs that stated “No walking on planks or ponds” Must have been in the Bible-belt…
