Resupply on LT - The Long Trail - Vermont

Can I r/s on the stretch between Killington and Jonesville? How about in the store @ Jonesville? I’m a lazy thru-hiker and would rather do this on the fly then have a lot of up front preparation.

Thoughts? Celt? Wedding Singer?

The Jonesville store is good. You can find what you need to get to the big grocery store in Johnson.

I’ve never resupplied in that section but I’ve been to Brandon and Waitsfield and they both have big-for-Vermont grocery stores. I think Middlebury is a good town too. All are in the 7 to 15 mile from the LT range but on good road with good people. I hitched to Waitsfield once with great success.

BB, I got your email but had to put it in my draft box till tonight, I’m now late for work!

Thanks Celt. Looks like I’m going SOBO with Deb W mid-Sept. I have an AT buddy in Bristol too that I may call upon.

Is there a store in Jonesville? I know that the old country store is long gone. Last time I was through there it looked like just a Post Office.

PS: Flatbread Pizza in Waitsfield is highly recommended.

I resupplied in Waitsfield. You can reach it by hitching east at Appalachian Gap (VT17) and then bear north on VT100. There is a good convenience store that has a deli/grill inside and a library across the street. It is 22 miles south of Jonesville and 59 miles north of Killington.

Peaks- There is a general store & deli about 0.1 of a mile west of the post office, just out of sight around a corner on the left.

Just to update anyone, I found the store there to basically suck. I was out of fuel, so it was imperative that I find HEET, which they didn’t have, so we ended up getting a ride with Papa Bower to Richmond where I was success in both fuel and r/s and in the end we spent the night with a woman who took us and the dog in since the Bowers were full. Ended up back in Richmond this last Friday night after we bailed from Lincoln Gap, this time staying @ the Bowers. Richmond definitely became my 2nd home out there.

Bristol was a great stop for r/s, fairly easy hitches from App Gap, although more were going back to Lincoln Gap.

So we didn’t make Killington after all, but it’s not a tragedy, give me an excuse to get out and do 40 miles sometime next year.

When I thru hiked the long trail the store @ Jonesville was very much appreicated (food, fuel & phone). If a hiker is not going to plan ahead and find out the details of possible resupply places then you should be prepared to take what you can get. It would be much better for those who will follow to have a friendly place to stop at. Rather than saying the placed SUCKED you should suggest that alcohol is a popular fuel and a can or two in addition the white gas might be a good thing for future hikers.

If you read up on the thread here, I did try to find out ahead of time what kind of supplies they had. I wasn’t counting on the HEET, but hoped for it. I’m not an imbecile, I didn’t tell them their selection was poor, I’m telling this forum, so others can plan ahead. I had a mail drop @ the PO, but I needed to fill in, there was basically nothing for dinner: no Liptons, Ramen, mashed potatoes, nothing. The deli appeared closed, there wasn’t even any cheese to be had. It was a sorry looking store, and I live in Maine, I’m used to small variety stores, this was not one of the best. Meanwhile, the small grocery in Richmond was great, for its size. The woman behind the counter was clearly not interested in what I might be looking for or need. Granted my mood at this time was really low, I was tired, and we ended up taking a nero. But in no way did I convey any of this negativity towards the store itself. When Celt mentioned I could get to Johnson in the above thread, he didn’t realize yet I was doing a sobo, so I was trying to resupply to Bristol/App or Lincoln Gap. I resupplied out of convenience stores and all manner of places on the AT last year over 6 months, I’m not a picky eater, but I do like a hot meal at night and they had nothing.

Just happened upon this discussion a wee bit late, but still wanted to add my two cents… I stopped in at the Jonesville country store early Sept. during my LT hike and they were great- they had all kinds of stuff, you just had to know where to look- or ask for help finding something- the cheese is hidden in a case in the butcher shop on the right, the ben & jerrys is stowed away near the movies, etc… and there were lots of ramens and other trail foods. the folks there were super nice - they even gave me a place to clean up and do laundry, etc. when I was unable to get ahold of any of the b&b’s nearby. It is definitely possible that they had not restocked recently when you were there, but I hate to see such awesome people condemned due to one bad experience.

cheers
