Lone Pine has a lot more resources–market, outfitter etc. The market at Independence has closed down but the Chevron station has a mini market with some supplies including alcohol, fuel canister and limited freeze dried meals. There is a shower and laundry available also. There are post offices at both locations.
To resupply at Lone Pine (unless your hiking out over the Whitney trail or some other route) you’ll be coming out at Kearsarge to Onion Valley. The road from there goes to Independence and you could get to Lone Pine south or Bishop north from there.

To be clear, i’m pretty sure what Still Lookin’ is recommending, and what i’d also recommend, is to take the Kearsarge Pass trail regardless. The hitch from the Cottonwood Pass exit may possibly be more difficult on weekdays, and even if it the hitch is the same the Kearsarge exit is better placed in the middle of the segment between Kennedy Meadows and VVR (or Red’s Meadow or Mammoth).

So, take Kearsarge, and then you can go whichever direction on the highway to whereever your ride goes, or where you sent stuff, or where your friends go.

How about exiting at Trail Pass to Horseshoe Meadow - abouta one hour walk. Easiest of the Sierra passes. I don’t think you’ll have any trouble getting a ride from Horseshoe to Lone Pine. Big advantage being in LP vice hitching there from Independence.
