Resupply towns - The Colorado Trail

What are the traditional (easiest to get to, closest to trail)resupply towns for a thru-hike? I do about 20 miles a day and will probably send packages to P.O.s on the way. I just got the guide/map package from the CTA but only Breckenridge is leaping out at me as an obvious one.

Copper mountain is a good place to send a package as you walk right by the PO. Leadville was a great trail town to stop at and a easy hitch (for us at least).

Frisco is a free bus ride, there is a stop right near the trail road crossing. Plenty of hotels , restaurants and supermarket .

I used Yogi’s CT book for my hike this year. It’s got all the resupply information you need. You can get the Yogi’s Colorado Trail book here: www.pcthandbook.com

Highway 50 to Salida and Highway 149 to Creede. How much traffic is there on these two roads? Easy hitch?

I spent September in Salida. There is lots of traffic on highway 50. I won’t speculate on how easy it is to hitch to Salida, but I will say we gave a ride to a CDT thru hiker into Salida.

No idea about highway 149 to Creede.

When I did my end-to-end in 2011, there was plenty of traffic on highway 50…almost too much traffic, and it was going too fast. There were lots of RVs from Texas towing trailers with ATVs, motocrosses or other assorted toys, but it’s extremely rare that you’ll ever get a hitch from an out of state vacationer. Instead, you just have to wait until a local comes by in a 15 year old piece of crap car, and that’ll be your hitch.

My experience is that the people who have nothing are often the most generous in helping others.

Did a thru-hike last summer. Used maildrops for almost every town. My resupplies were:

  1. Frisco (Stayed in Breckenridge but used the Post Office in Frisco because it supposed to be friendlier than the one in Breck.)
  2. Twin Lakes (tiny post office inside the general store)
  3. Monarch Spur RV Park and Campground (they accept maildrops)
  4. Lake City (the only time I didn’t use a maildrop)
  5. Silverton

Lake City and Silverton were the only towns that required a hitch.
