Ride to trailhead/lodging? Mammoth

My husband and I will be hiking a section of the John Muir Trail starting at Agnew Meadows (Mammoth area) starting out on Sept 26th. We will be taking the YARTS bus to Mammoth the night before and would like a ride to the trailhead Sunday morning and possibly a place to stay (the Mammoth Mountain Inn is pricey)for Saturday night. Any ideas? The Mammoth Shuttle stops running Sept 6th.

Our group is hiking from Devils Postpile to Yosemite Valley starting on the 23rd so we’ll miss you by a couple days. You can take a cab if you can’t secure a ride and there are some cheap hotels in town, especially that time of year. Have a great hike.

When i was in Mammoth this summer, we called a couple places in the phone book (the first few listed) and found some very cheap rates. It’s not ski season, so with a few calls you should find something in your price range.

The Mammoth Best Western is great for the price ($149 for one room with two beds). Joanna and I enjoyed it quite thoroughly. You will be very close to the YARTS stop but if it stops running you could e-mail Joanna (batails@hotmail.com) and she could connect you with a whole host of ride services. One particularly interesting chap, Richard, would be fun to connect with. He drives people all over the Sierra wherever they need to go.

There is a hostel in Mammoth that was the best one that I have ever stayed at. Or camp up by the Mammoth Mountain Inn. You can find spots right behind it. Even use their pools. The hotel will be about 15% occupied at the time.
