Ridgecrest/Piersonville

I am leaving for Kennedy Meadows, south, on or about June 8,9. I am taking Greyhound to Reno and CREST bus line to Piersonville or Ridgecrest. I haven’t been able to figure out how to get from there to Kennedy Meadows. I called a shuttle service. They want 180$. I talked to the woman at Kennedy Meadows store and she didn’t seem too hopeful about hitchhiking. Any thoughts? Trail angels?

Piersonville is just a wide spot on the road, went to a dirt race track there a few years ago…don’t get off the bus there. I don’t think a phone is there, just dirt and a towing company. Ridgecrest has every thing Piersonville doesn’t, like fast food, phones, hotels, gas stations, stores, houses, people, lots of them, and bus station. try looking up Greyhound Bus Lines.com or call 1-800-231-2222 good luck with your travels…dahmer

If you can add 50 miles to your trip, it might be easier for you to start at Walker Pass, which is 50 trail miles south of KM. You can take a bus to Onyx, then hitch up to Walker Pass. I had a friend meet me at Onyx last year, and I believe he did it all by bus.

Kern County Regional Transit (in Bakersfield) is the bus that services Onyx. You might find their number by doing a web search, or maybe the Onyx store could help you (760-378-2151) or try the Onyx Post Office (760-378-2121). I find that PO personnel in small towns are a wealth of information for hikers.

FYI - in case you haven’t been to KM before, there really isn’t any “there” there. KM is just a store. There are a few ranch houses scattered around, and a restaurant somewhere down the road. But it is by no means a town. Just the one store.

As a final thought - doing the extra 50 miles before KM might help you get your trail legs before you tackle the Sierra.

Good luck.

I decided to go with the Bakersfield then Kern County Transit to Onyx. It saves me $ and 1.5 days on the bus. It also gives me 3 extra days to acclimate and get trail tough. I am using Yogi’s book for the trip. My last final is on Monday, I get on a bus on Wednesday, I start hiking from Walker Pass on Thursday. Yippie Yi Yeah
