Road to Montezuma Pass

Does anyone out there know how the road to Montezuma Pass at the begining of the trail is? I’m interested in the one comeing up the east side of the pass from Sierra Vista. According to the guidebook, that is only 8 miles or so and the west side is 14 miles from pavement. My parents are taking me up with a brand new Toyota Camry, and I don’t want them to freak. Otherwise I just might rent them a SUV for the day or just get dropped off down the road, and walk to the pass.

Thanks for the help,
Guino

Nevermind people. I just called Coronado National Memorial and they said that they’re road was smooth and would be fine. Also, there is no entrance fee, and there is no snow on Miller Peak, but it should rain/ snow this weekend.

IIRC, the road to the Coronado NatMon visitor’s center is better than the steep, switchbacking, albeit graded dirt road to the pass beyond. Joe’s Canyon Trail starts across from the v.c., reaching Montezuma Pass in 2 miles.

Thanks for the info on the 2 mile trail Blisterfree. It might be a better option then driving. Granted if it was my car I wouldn’t care, heck I’d jump it like I did all my other vehicles. Since it’s my parents though, hiking 2 miles of steep is better then driving. :cheers

Go to Google Earth and drill down to the Montezuma Pass Road. You can virtually drive every inch of it, and even see the beginning of the AZT, driving west all the way to Sonoita. Quite amazing. Have a good hike.

So we drove up it in a Brand new Camry, 2 wheel drive passenger car. Even though some spots had 5 inches of snow on it, it was completely ok. Be sure to check out the Chain Mail suits you can put on and the Conquistador Helmets at the Visitor Center. Funny in Arizona, the rangers had the road closed to traffic due to the snow until about 45 minutes before I got there. Got to wash the car now though
