Paved or dirt? I loves the dirt roads-old forest service roads, pavement is hell. Depending on whether or not you walk into towns; a few miles here and there. Nothing terrible. A few hundred yards after Davenport Gap, Bear Mountain for a mile or so.

if you blue-blaze, you’ll find a nice assortment of forrest service roads to sink your boots into. the ones in PA come to mind as the most beneficial…avoiding the cursed rock. but yeah, not much in the way of pavement:D

You can hike along the Blue Ridge Parkway for a good chunk in Virginia if you want and all the way through S.N.P.

I thruhiked GA-ME '05. Very little of the trail is road walking. It does goes through some towns of course, I would say there are a handful of times where the trail went on the paved roads for a mile or two, Hot Springs, NC. HArper’s Ferry for a little while, Hanover, NH. Damascus, VA. The most road walking usually done is walking around in a town while resupplying and zero days- SHORTS

There’s roadwalk at Dalton, MA, Delaware Water Gap Don’t forget Duncannon - stop for a beer at Doyles. Then there’s US 7 north of Jugs End - stop for a beer at Shea’s. And crossing the roads at Shearbourne Pass (beer at the Inn) and at Abol Bridge (beer at the Campstore). Hmmmmmmm, I begining to see a pattern here!

Many hikers took to the road during this stretch because some of the better views unfortunately seem to only be from the road. For some it is also a section where Virginia length and frustration really sets in. There is also some great road walking opportunities in Connecticut along Rt. 7 and the Hoosatanic River which provide some great New England village scenery. (I could spell check that but I am too tired…thanks for the understanding)
