Do them both. I have spent time in both areas and if at all possible go to both areas. The views are incredible and the trail is in great shape thanks to the trail clubs

I’d do Roan. I have been over Standing Indian 3 times, and it’s a great hike. But, last year I went over Roan for the first time, then went north from Carver’s Gap to Overmountain Shelter for the night, then the next day over the humps (May 1 and 2). Read my description of those two days in my journal at http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?id=61971 and the following entry. I had never been there before so these two days were a fantastic hike. A great experience. CBiscuit

I’d highly recommend Roan Mtn and the Humps with Overmountain Shelter in between which is probably the most idyllic view on the whole AT. Enjoy!

NO doubt in my mind. Do as CBiscuit said. This was one of my FAVORITE sections on the entire AT!! Carver’s Gap and the Humps. BEAUTIFUL during a nice weather day, as I was lucky to have. You can see the trail winding up the balds in front of you. INCREDIBLE. Do this section. I don’t remember there being any view on top of Roan…just a huge friggin’ climb. Carver’s Gap to 19E is only, like 13.7 miles though. For a 3 day hike, you may want to plan Roan AND the Humps.

CBiscuit, Rainbow, Leki-Less and now Bilko can’t all be wrong. I have sectioned hike from Springer to 19E. From Carver Gap to 19E is the best section on the trail so far. Don’t bother with Roan Mountain, unless you hike to the shelter from Carver for the night and then back down. It is only about an hour climb up to the Roan Shelter from Carver Gap. I have been to Standing Indian and it was overcast and didn’t see anything. If it is overcast hiking to 19E you will still have a wonderful expereince.

But be ready for a good climb if you are coming from the South.

Roan gets my vote with Overmountain Shelter, both are not to be missed.
