Roaring Fork Shelter

Is Roaring Fork Shelter north of Max Patch still there? I read in the handbook that it was scheduled to be removed summer of 2004 and replaced by a new one closer to Max Patch, but last I heard (a few months ago) it had not been removed. Thanks for the info!

The Old Roaring Fork shelter is still there. The new shelter is still a pile of logs, a few miles to the south of the existing old one, as noted correctly in Wingfoot.

The CMC is working very hard to complete this year the construction of a new shelter 1.8 miles north of Max Patch Summit, or 3.6 miles south of Lemon Gap or 3.1 miles south of the current shelter location. This new shelter will be also called Roaring Fork Shelter, but the old “Roaring Fork Shelter” at the old location will remain in place and not torn down until the new shelter is complete.

The new shelter will sleep eight hikers. The access trail, shelter and privy will be handicap accessible. The water source for the new shelter is located about 800 feet both north and south on the AT.

Just in case anyone’s wondering the privy IS completed.
