I loved hiking but I don’t think your average joe would be that interested in the “thru hikers” story. How can you show all of the internal struggles, the hunger, the misery, the triumphs, etc…Most would just yawn and think we’re all a bunch of nuts.

Brysons book, on the other hand, shows the trail from the “outsiders” point of view. Its something he is very good at and his special brand of humor is probably the only way a movie could be made for the masses.

Hopefully it can serve as a gateway for people to become more interested and invovled in the trail in a positive way.

For the record: I am generally against making books into movies.

The thought that this movie will be harmful to the AT by creating more day/weekend hikers is just wrong. Sure many people will get out on the trail and some will learn that they hate to hike and some wont respect the trail But many will love it and become advocates for it . Few of us will ever do the entire trail. It is people like these that help make, protect and improve this trail. The AT was not created by and for thru hikers alone. It is for all of us.

"Who do you think will be the first to set up shop in the 100 mile wilderness;Holiday Inn or Budget Inn ?? "

actually the Appalachian Money Club (AMC) was the first. $250 per night for their retreat.

I was not whoring. Who said I was whoring.

Drinking?? No one I know was drinking in town. Milk and an occasional soda. That’s all I saw.

Crousing?? Is that the same as grousing? This is where the momma grouse does that faux broken wing thing and runs ahead down the trail squawking, huffing and puffing to get your attention?

OHHHH. You mean carousing. I had to put that into MS Word. It said “partying and revelry”.

Nope. Didn’t see any of that going on. Everyone I knew had their nose to the grindstone, day in and day out.

The “Salad Dressing Man” is Paul Newman, Not Robert Redford.

I’m from North Georgia, and I’m afraid he’ll want to portray everyone there like the set of DELIVERENCE. Mind you, there are some folks like that, but some of us do have indoor plumbing and wood floors.

If you don’t want a movie about the AT, we could use one about the Florida National Senic Trail!

BBH, let’s keep that one a secret…the forgotten real Florida… It’s still quiet except for the occasional gun fire.

Ask fly fishermen what Redford’s “A River Runs Thru It” did to fly fishing. They refer to time as “before the movie” and “after the movie.” Some resources can only take so much human pressure.

Hi old&intheway, I think might have missed Datto’s humor. Looks to me like he was playing along with your post, acting out the part of “the accused.” He was working with your material.

Mawee, thanks for the kind words on the book. You got it - what I was trying to portray, humor-wise. I laughed out loud at parts of Bryson’s book, but also felt dismay at some of “superior” stances he took for cheap laughs. it seemed to me there’s enough natural hilarity custom-built into the human condition to play with without pandering to someone’s need to feel better at the expense of another. But that’s just me - it takes all kinds to make a world.
