I hope he actually does it this time. He’s been talking about doing that for several years. It could be either really good or really bad.
Although, on the other hand the trail may be crowded afterwards. Bummer!

I can’t wait for shelters to be sponsored by Wal-Mart and McDonalds… Ewwwww, maybe even Starbucks! Who do you think will be the first to set up shop in the 100 mile wilderness;Holiday Inn or Budget Inn ?? Perhaps both… Somewhere in the 50 mile range. Maybe they can get their money together and pave a trail through the wilderness… That way people could push their off spring in double wide strollers and ride bikes… The day/weekend hikers will be out of control! Real thru-Hikers will avoid them like Will Smith avoided the night seekers in “I am Legend”… Shelters will be completely damaged due to over usage…
I’d rather my coworkers and family members say “Appawhat” ??

So ,Mr Redford ,please don’t do it… Pretty please, with a Grammy on top. Can’t you make “The Natural 2” or something? How’ bout “Indecent Proposal 2” ? This time instead of offering Demi Moore a million dollars for sex, you offer Brittany Spears 50G’s for a lap dance… Or can’t you just stick to the Salad Dressing thing… Wait, do I have the wrong person? Anyways, it’s great salad dressing and I heard you do good things with the proceeds… … …

Pros or cons, I hope the director doesn’t ruin the story. How about Red going and doing a real section hike and get to know the trail before hand. THEN he could have his ear chewed on by those of us that want a walk in the woods and not a mob scene. Maybe he could be convinced to donate some proffits to the ACT. Er…yeah. Just a thought. I have a hiker lawyer friend near Hollywood. I get him to send over a note.

There appears to be quite a concern about the possibility of a movie version of Bryson’s “A Walk in theWoods,” which I also share. Most of the comments express fear of some kind of detrimental effect upon our beloved trail. Yes, it is true that the more something is publicized, the more damaging effect can happen. Take a look at the cliff dwellings of the southwest and the vandalism that occurred following the discovery of those treasures. However, there is also a positive viewpoint. As more people become aware of this treasure we call the AT, the more there may be a desire to protect it from all kinds of encroachments, land development, energy development, ie. windmills, mining, etc.
One thing I have noticed, many people will see it for its great scenic beauty and “Hike” on it through seeing the movie, reading the many books, and browsing the journals of those who actually do it. More people do adventures vicariously than by otherwise. They prefer the comfort of the Holiday Inn over that of a three sided shelter or even worse a pad on the ground. The more who are exposed the more allies we have to defend and protect our sacred trail.

See you in the Spring

Brysons book motivated me to hike the AT. I’ve thruhiked in 2002 and have section hiked 3000 miles more. But when I was a newbie in 2000 just after I read the book the woods were very crowded with other newbies. I hope the next round of newbies get into it too. I’ve also hike Florida and other trails but the AT is very special in all the ways a trail can be. We’ve got enough hikers so lets pull up the drawbridge now ? That isn’t right. The trail is already overmanaged by all the “professionals” The real damage is done by making it too easy. SInce some of the shelters are sponsered now it wont surprise me that eventually most will be but I doubt that Holiday in could do more damage in the Whites than teh AMC. At least the huts would be cheaper!

I don’t see the AT Thru-hiking community as generating enough money for corporations to take advantage of it. 2,000 a year attempt the trail and some percentage of that finish, not over 25% mind you, so in essence 500 people spend $2,000 or more, we’re talking a million dollars maybe. I think the trail is safe, and I would hope that any film shot on the trail or about the trail would be rigid in their environmental beliefs and applications.

My 2 cents.

Number one question posed to me by non hiking folks interested in hiking. “Have you read that book , “a walk in the woods”.” Answer: “yep, halfway, then I never picked it up again.” Comeback; " well it’s full of interesting facts" Answer #2; “Yep full of facts he read in another book somewhere.” What can ya do? :smokin

I loved the book but I hope he doesnt play the lead. We’d need a rolly polly, middle aged midwestern guy like Charles Martin Smith or John C Reilly.

Despite ll the grief he’s gottren over the years, I think Bryson deserves a great deal of credit for writing a very funny and imformative book. He’s a great researcher and has got a keen wit.

Will their be a Guinness sponsored shelter with free samples? If not then heck with it. I wouldn’t worry too much about current society invading our space…when they find out there’s actual physical activity involved they’ll quit after a mile.

Does Billy Ray Cyrus use the woods or the privy? Holy cow I think Marie passed out in there.

Back in a moment with the story.

THINK of all the trail magic going on !!! All kinds of people setting up hoping to see the movie stars. There will be so much you will not have to go into town for resupply.

I hope he stays at home to shoot his movie. He owns 6,000 acres in Utah. Make a “movie set AT” on your humble little place. IMHO we dont need movie sets and stars on the AT.

THIS JUST IN!!!

I don’t know what you’ve heard, but it seems that the actor who will portray Katz will be Eric Cartman, from the cartoon South Park.

Word has it that the casting director has already been nominated for a grammy award.

Now back to your regularly scheduled drool. :lol :lol :lol

I think it’ll be like 2000, except it’ll be a year after the movie. Like all these type of things. Over the years i’ve seen this happen more than a few times. Nat geo [or some big mag.] does a feature article and the following year the trail is “loaded”.It generally drops right off after that. Maybe for the one year after the movie [if it gets made] then it’ll go back. I sure would’nt plan a hike the year after the movie played though, ha ha .

The Desperado

So, does anyone know what year it is slated to be released, or at least go into production?

the salad dressing guy up the road says it ain"t him making the movie, and yes, he does great things with his revenue. I don’t see anything wrong with the movie, when “Apollo 13” came out, you still needed a fully equipped rocket to get to the moon, no matter who you were. I just hope we don’t see a Sierra mountain in the background when they leave a hostel in the Carolinas

farsang’s right!..what most people know about the AT,they learned from bill bryson!..and i sorta think that’s unfortunate…i LOVE a good laugh as much as the next maw-ee, but not at the expense of others…i always like to recommend other “reads” by authors like J R ‘MODEL T’ TATE (‘walkin’ on the happy side of misery’)…or one of the many great journals online by hikers like ‘postcard’,‘stumpknocker’ or ‘liteshoe’…jan’s new book, ‘the ordinary adventurer’ (though written about her hike on the long trail) is one of the best for well-written humor as well as an accurate picture of what it actually FEELS like to go out for a long ‘walk in the
woods’…(and she did it all with respect and courtesy!..way to go, jan!..hmmmmm…who can they get to play ‘you’ in YOUR movie? ;>)
