Route 66 - Appalachian Trail

Since it was replaced by I40, I have had this nostalgic attraction to travel old Route 66. I have driven some sections and I’m not yet interested in long distance biking…I would rather walk it and have been consdering hiking/backpacking the southwest section winter.

They have a website which provides detailed maps and directions as not all of it is well marked.

Tenting would be limited to long sections (where I could find a place to tent) as I would probably take the camper and use the Jeep to shuttle myself back from time to time.

My initial feeling is it would not be appropiate to journal such a hike here as it is not a “trail.” Just wondered if most concur.

The recent post about the 700 mile Enchanement Trail really is fascinating. If I can get enough info on it, I am definitely going to walk it while I’m down there.

Hi skeemer, following Route 66 sounds like a very cool trip. Whereas I don’t really have an opinion about the appropriatness of posting a journal here, I do know that several people who do post here also have their own websites where they talk about their travels and they are able to customize it to their personal taste. You might ask around to see how they do this. Have fun…no matter what you decide to do! I used to live right off Route 66 in western Oklahoma, where it parallels I-40 w/in a few hundred feet for a while.

Post here! We would all enjoy reading your journal as it is a hiking experience that some of us might be interested in repeating.

Where is the post about the Enchantment Trail? Did you read Brian Frankel’s Hayduke Trail journal (on his ULA site)? It’s awesome.

We biked to Utah from SF with support in June. It was a fun trip but, I agree, distance biking does not compare to hiking.

Happy hiking,
