Rugged Cameras - The Colorado Trail

Hello Everyone,
Im curious if anyone has used those waterproof, shockproof outdoor cameras and what you think of their picture quality. I personally am a camera destroyer, if not moisture, my cameras almost always fall victim to death by dirt. Im fine getting a used camera and crossing my fingers in hope it will survive at least the length of the trail, so long has the pictures are quality. If you can recommend one of these outdoor cameras let me know thanks.

I have the pentax Optio water proof. It has survived every thing I could throw at it. Hiking, Mt. biking Mine is an older 5 mil. and the newer ones go up much higher and are less than I paid. Get a good high speed SD card and an extra batt. It is worth the money

I have a Gopro HD camera, kinda spendy @$300 but very rugged and water proof. fairly small and light too. Very simple to run, only 2 buttons, Cons - no screen to reveiw pictures and only takes 5 mega pixle photos. Takes HD video though. good camera if you are into extreem sports. works great for helmet cam shots.

I have an Olympus Optio weatherproof camera. I actually dropped into a brook one day and it still works fine. The only draw back is you can’t see the screen in bright light and there is no view finder to line up a shot so you have to guess if the photo in centered in the frame the way you would like it to be. Takes great pictures.

If you’re looking for a DSLR the Pentax K7 is water resistant (basically proof outside total extended dunkings), cold resistant, dust resistant… I’ve used it in driving rain, zero degrees and covered in snow. Additionally, the kit lets is also water resistant. Finally, it is a mega bargain compared to the Nikon and Canon offerings. It is a semi-pro camera body and I ‘think’ you can get it for $750 for B&H right now…

I have had both olympus Stylus Tough Mods, The 8000 ($400) I had first, Freeze, shock, water proof, I thought that the pictures had a lot of “noise” in the pixels, but that may just have been me not understanding the settings. Also it took a long time between shots and had a lot of “shutter lag”. I did however drop it out of the attic in the boathouse,(15ft)it bounced of the Drill Press and hit the concrete floor. The only damage I could tell was a small dent in the metal case. It took REALLY great under water pictures and videos in the ocean. Somewhere along the line the microphone stopped picking up very well.

Now I have the 3000, ($150) It seem to be not so over powerd, and has a 2sec. timer, which the 8000 did not.

I have that Casio has a new adventure camera, it looks very well built!

Another Olympus fan here, Stylus 1030sw, can’t kill the thing, wide screen, great pictures (10mp), easy to use, underwater pictures in the ocean (I was scared at first to plunge it in, but it worked great!) Never have to worry about putting it in a ziploc (or waterproof bag) when it rains, just keep in walking!
