?'s About the Whites

I’m heading on a trip to the White Mountains shortly and will be doing some hikes. I’m curious about coin-operated showers like the Adirondack High Peaks have at the Adirondack Loj. Are there any coin-op showers at Crawford Notch State Park, Pinkham Notch Visitors Center and the Franconia Ridge park? Any info would be great!

Hike on!

If I remember correctly the shower room at Pinkham is coin operated. If Crawford Notch SP is like other SPs the showers would be free if they have them at all.

Coin op @ Pinkham downstairs. I think you can even “rent” a towel from upstairs. No showers other than that I know of. What you’re calling a state park, is not some big park with a visitor center, it’s just an area designated as such in the Notches-no real services to speak of. Perhaps the new fancy Highland Center in Crawford built by the AMC has hiker shower rooms, but I would doubt it, haven’t stepped foot in this monstrosity yet.

I’ve used the coin op showers at Pinkham (skipping the rental towel), they are available to all (there is also an AYCE healtful lunch and dinner available if you hit Pinkham at the right time). There are also showers at the Lafayette Campground at Franconia Ridge St. Park (near, but not on the AT) - I’m not sure how that works since I’ve never tried to use them. The Highland Center at Crawford notch does have baths and showers that are available to overnight (paying through the nose guests) - I’ve never set foot inside there, so I do not know if they are available for visitors who aren’t staying overnight.

There are coin showes at Lafayette Campground in Franconia Notch state Park. 1 3/4 mile off the AT at Lonesome Lake Hut.

I think that Crawford Notch Campground also has coin showers,(about 2 miles down the road) but why not go 1 mile further down the road and use the ones at the General Store, since it’s a good place for resupply anyway.

Showers at Highland Center for guests only. But, for $25 you can stay in the hostel. The fee includes linens and all you can eat breakfast.

pedxing, they do have showers in Highland Center. I stayed in their bunkhouse a couple of nights ago. $25 a night with a great breakfast included, another $18 for dinner. of course if you just want a shower and don’t want to stay, just walk right in and take one. The bunkhouse isn’t in the main building and it has two showers, and nobody would either know or care if someone just walked in and used the showers there.
it’s 3.5 miles off the Trail, though, but I think a sidetrail connects right to it.

Thanks for the report peaks. 25 is certainly above hostel prices for a shower, breakfast and a bunk (especially with no free shuttle), but not bad for the AMC.

0101: Interesting idea on the stealth shower at Highland. I wonder if anyone has tried it. Non-guests could use showers at the old AMC hostel.

18 for dinner!? Ouch!

There are coin op showers at the State Park Campgound in Crawford Notch 0.8 miles east from where the AT crosses Route 302. There are coin-op washers and dryers too. The store at the private Crawford Notch Campground is a couple miles farther east.
