Safe deposit bag

I have a top-of-the line Western Mountaineering bag, rated to zero, and am reluctant to store it in my house until next winter. If a thief came in and saw it, I could lose a valuable investment. So, I’m thinking of storing it in a safe deposit box over the summer.

It stuffs small enough to fit in an 8x12 box at the bank, but I’m concerned about a few things. Like condensation in the safe area. Moisture tends to condense on cool metal surfaces easily. Also, my bank is in an older building and there have been problems with black mold in several older buildings in town. Should I be concerned?

You should never store your bag, for long periods of time, all bunched up. It affects the loft of the bag. Bags should be stored hanging on a hook all loose.

I am planning on hiking this trail for 4 days the week after Easter. If anyone has been on this trail lately i was wondering how deep the snow is. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

why don’t you leave it in a friend or family member’s closet?

Are you being serious… this smelling somewhat of a troll. Personally, I believe you have nothing to worry about. I had my vehicle broken into a few years back. I had just returned from a weekend outdoors. I had a full pack of gear in the trunk. I also had my mtn. bike on the roof with my front wheel in the trunk. The theif had popped the trunk, obviously looking around. From the over $2k worth of things to take… the theif only took my $100 radio/cd player from the dash. I’m thinking electronics are about the only thing most theives are looking for. Especially those who are addicts and whatnot. If it were me breaking into someones car I would have left the radio and went for the backpack full of $900 gear and the $1500 mtn. bike.

If you’re really concerned about your sleeping bag, you can sent it to me and I will look after it :lol.

If you were a thief type, and you saw a bag like that all lofted up (I hang it over a door, so he couldn’t miss it) with that microfiber shell, quality construction and cozy hood just inviting you to crawl inside, wouldn’t you?

I sure would :lol. Which is why I would be a horrible theif. Why dont you put it in a cotton storage sack? It should have come with one. My WM came with one. This way it would be less inconspicuous.

it would probably cost you less money to take out an insurance policy that would cover loss due to theft. instead of “investing” in a moldy old safe deposit box that would barely fit one bag, all your valuables would be covered. Just make sure you document everything (receipts and pictures if possible) and read the fine print of the policy.

“electicliz” has a really good idea. If you have homeowners or renters insurance, check your deductable, to see what your coverage is. You can usually get a (I think it’s called) “rider” for a nominal fee on special items.

Do NOT stuff it in a safe deposit box! Eeek!

Hmmm…Just happened to remember that we had a really good dry cleaners in the area which would store your down comforters, (no don’t have them dry cleaned, either), off season clothing, fur coats, etc for a fee. Don’t know if such places can still be found…?

What if the adjuster denied the claim and said they would only replace it with a $50 LL Bean bag? You know how those insurance companies are.

You don’t have to be a hiker for a quality sack of feathers to call your name.
