This may be a dumb question, but is there any time of year when camping equipment goes on sale? For example, it’s best to buy candy after Halloween. I’m planning a thru hike next April and I wasn’t sure if there’s a good time to buy everything or to just get it throughout the year. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

Grinds, I find the best time of year to purchase equipment such as clothing is in the off season. Winter gear in spring or summer when the stores are changing over to warmer weather items and then the same is true with shorts and t-shirts. Best time to purchase them in when the cold weather returns. As for tents, packs, etc. decide what you want to purchase and then wait for sales, closeouts, After the traditional summer season is over many stores run sales, also check before and after Christmas. I routinely keep my eye our for items from REI, EMS and Campmor. Most of these stores have websites that will notify you of sales items. I like to try to keep my cost down as much as possible, so I have purchase items from WalMart, Dicks Sporting Goods and K-Mart as well. Good luck,

Barry, thanks a lot for your help. I’ve already purchased some stuff, but now I’m finding the same items on sale. I’ll take a look at those sights. REI outlet is throwing a huge sale right now. I found the same jacket I bought for $120 for $68. Pretty sweet. Thanks again.

I’ve noticed that R.E.I. has there 20% off sale Feb-Apr. They ran a 20% off sale for 3 weeks then a 30% off sale 2 weeks after then another 20% sale shortly after that for a couple of weeks. All between Feb-Apr. I wish I could remember the exact dates but I believe I’m close. Good luck
