If a person was to do a southbound on the AT, what would be the ideal start date? Snow, black flies, etc

Katahdin is often open before June 1 if the trail gets clear of snow before then. You have to be prepared to cross some streams that are cold and high with snow melt. Be prepared for serious shrinkage. I also wonder when the earliest you can get ferried across the Kennebec. With the water that cold I don’t even think it would be possible to wade it.
