Scary shut-down storm

The storm that is just beginning to affect the NW is EXTREMELY strong for this time of year. It is not at all your typical September storm that drops a little snow, brings some brisk temperatures, and moves on quickly.

Rather the crest is going to be subjected to very strong winds, rain, and perhaps considerable snow for several days straight at least starting right now. It is going to be very difficult to be hunkered down out there much less actually hike and make any miles.

I recognize our culture is prone to hyperbole (particularly related to the PCT - see illegals, rattlers, heat, river crossings, bears, etc…) but please understand exaggerating weather (or anything natural-related for that matter) is not my style. As a skier I pay a lot of attention to weather patterns and storms and only make this entry because this truly is a scary-looking event that could take a lightweight hiker by surprise. It is much worse than locals would be expecting per “normal” this time of year.

If you can still communicate with anyone out there or if anyone is tempted to head back in during a break in the action through mid-week please make sure they have maps and know their bail-out routes to lower elevations.

This is a uncharacteristically strong, long-lasting, and potentially very potent event for this time of year.

Be smart. Be safe. Have maps.

This storm has made the national news. A month’s worth of rain in one day in some areas. Me? I’m putting another log in the woodstove and planning next year’s hike.
