Scorpions - Appalachian Trail

Hi everyone,
I am curious if anyone has encountered scorpions while hiking the A.T. in Georgia. I always thought that scorpions lived in places like Arizona, etc… About a year ago I stayed at a friends place near Lake Lanier. My friend said by the way, if you see a scorpion during the night don’t worry, they don’t sting that bad. I thought he was full of B.S. until he showed me a couple of dead ones that were in a light fixture. Just curious.

I see them every now and then here at home in Tennessee. I’m sure they’re around the AT in the south but you really don’t have to worry about them. The one’s around here have a sting like a yellow jacket and wouldn’t hurt you too much unless you had an allergic reaction. Just take the normal precautions like checking your shoes before slipping them on in the morning (I’m more worried about Black Widow and Brown Recluse spiders).

A friend of mine got stung at her house in N Georgia and it gave her bad cramps but the Doc told her that cramps were normal. She had just sat down on the toilet and it nailed her on the back of her leg.

What the guys should be most worried about would be the privey, as they are more common at shelters these days. Spiders love the area under the seat. In the old days when priveys were common to all homes, cases of spider bite were common. Guess where most were bitten!! The Black Widow commonly used this site as home.

Yeah, we’ve got scorpions down here in Georgia, but as earlier posts have mentioned, there are much nastier bugs around too.

It is interesting to see this thread. My son got stung last fall at his girlfriends apt. in Auburn by one of these. He called me asking what to do about the sting, and I thought he had to be mistaken. I’d never heard of scorpions in these parts until then. He assured me that he knew it WAS a scorpion. I told him to treat it about like a wasp sting. Take some benedryl, and put something on it for the stinging-a baking soda paste. It did not turn into anything serious, and I learned there are scorpions in these parts-not that I’ve ever seen one.
