Has anyone used Sealskinz waterproof gloves? The reviews seem pretty good online but im not sure how reliable they can be. Has anyone used these gloves before? If I were to get them, their main purpose would be for multiday backpack trips in cold weather and typical daily use in the wintertime. Thanks!

I use both the gloves and the socks. Both work very well. I hike in sandals and sealskin socks in all weather, winter included (though I wouldn't do multi-day overnights in deep snow that way).

The downside to sealskins–weight.

The gloves are very reliable, they usually have gripping designs on the palms, very handy when using trekking poles. If you want added warmth, I recommend taking the thinnest wool liner gloves you can find, they fit inside just fine and can be used when you don’t need to thh full-on sealskin glove.

I bought some but they made me sweat too much when hiking. They may be okay in camp, but too heavy for me. I use a liner with event gloves now.

....i'm not sure i understand the technology behind these "waterproof" products.....(i think, like redhat said, perhaps there might be a problem with perspiration?)....we made our own neoprene mittens for our first thruhike, but have never used them since....true, they are a little warmer when wet, but oh!....does neoprene ever STINK!....paw, sewed a nylon "cuff" onto the "wrists" of his jacket, that he can just turn down in wet weather (he used to just throw on a couple of plastic grocery bags!)....i now just go gloveless and usually keep one hand alternately "tucked" under my umbrella...(and i'm not gonna say how much i love my umbrella, 'cause y'all have heard me say that before!) :>)

There are special products for getting rid of the stinky odors. McNett MiraZyme and Sink the Stink are two I know of. You can find product at Dive shops and some outdoor retailers.

i've used the socks in Florida and on the PCT. They get an OK rating from me. If water goes over the sock tops they leaked. When they worked they worked well but some stream crossings the leak made them even heavier. Also once they get wet inside the wont dry out. Maybe ever. I ended up sending them home. My skin drys pretty fast anyway. They just are not worth the trouble. I may take them on the AT in April for a try.
