Your plan is a good one if you can handle it. IF you camp away from water and the trail, don’t sleep where you eat, and keep your smellier things in the bear vault, you can get away with keeping a few things in your food sack the first couple days out of Kennedy Meadows. After that though, you really gotta keep everything in the vault. More aggressive bears the further north you get towards the national parks.

If you don’t want that plan though, the side trail over Kearsarge Pass towards Independence is REALLY beautiful. Everybody i knew hitchhiked from the trailhead…no road walking…though the hitch might take a little while. Mail food to Independence post office, or hitch further to pretty nice Bishop that has everything.

Granted this isnt the reccomended way.

But… Hydro Heidi and I carried only the small BV can for the two of us. This made us legal when the rangers asked to see the can. It only held about 2.5 days for 2 people. The rest of the food we just kept in the tent with us. We carried the whole way to Mammoth from KM. I personally know several wilderness rangers in the Sierra Nevada who always keep their food in the tent with them. I personally like cooking my dinner from my sleeping bag just a ft out the tent door. I then eat in the tent. I cant say dont be scared of the bears. There are A LOT of bears in the sierra. I had some awful Bearanoia when I was out there the first time. It’s just that bears are super afraid of you. They are not nocturnal except in Yosemite and around the major campgrounds. I saw bear signs everyday in the So Cal mtns. Two days before the Sauffleys on that beautiful ridge where theres kind of a long water haul to a ranger station ( forgot the name) we woke up with bear tracks walking down the trail five feet from the tent. Didnt even investigate us. If hikers dont worry about So Cal bears. Why should we worry about the sierra bears? Definetly carry some sort of a can since it’s the law, and Yosemite rangers are brutal, your priority should be on weight savings though.

Im not sure, but it looks like you put 1500 calories for 11 days. Does that mean you only plan to eat 1500 a day? I would seriously reconsider this. 1500 is like a third of what you need for a day of pass climbing and postholing in the Sierra. Dont skimp on food out here.
