Sec. D Fire Closure

Does anyone know if the fire closure is still in effect in the Angeles National Forest? The water report says that it might be closed from I-15 to Soledad Canyon rd. That’s a huge chunk of trail. If open did anyone stroll through the area recently? Is the trail passable, or completely hidden by the burn? Is Hwy 2 Angeles Crest hwy the best Alternate? I’m about to start a Southbound hike from Walker Pass in the next couple of days to fight boredom and such. Any info would be great.

The highway is open but the forest is closed. There is some discussion about it on pct-l that might help, or contact Donna or PCTA for the proposed roadwalk around it. The trail in section d is supposed to be closed for at least a year.

Guino - You’re welcome to test this potential detour out. Although it looks good on the maps, I have no idea if it will pan out on the ground… My goal in formulating this detour was the least amount of road walking. I have assumed that the PCT will reopen south of Wrightwood (Sheep Fire) by next Spring. If the PCT is closed through the Sheep Fire area when you reach Wrightwood, you could just hike Lone Pine Canyon RD south to I15 @ Cajon Pass. The following was copied from my Trail Journal.

The infamous ‘Station Fire’ destroyed about 40 miles of the PCT in Section ‘D’ (San Gabriel mountains outside of Los Angeles) this year. The approximate burn on the PCT is from Camp Glenwood (PCT mile 400.7) to Mattox Canyon Creek (PCT mile 440.2). Next year, I would like to connect my footsteps from Mexico to Canada & I’m not a big fan of road walking (who is?)…

So I worked out a potential PCT detour route that cuts out most of the paved highway walking. I used Tom Harrison Maps and various online Forest Service & USGS maps and an overlay of the Station Fire perimeter from the PCT Postholer site. I have no idea if this route will work on the ground… but it looks good on the maps

If anyone has any other potential routes or info/corrections for this route, please let me know.

NORTHBOUND FROM PCT @ VINCET GAP OR ISLIP SADDLE:

(1) VINCENT GAP: Manzanita Trail (High Desert Nat. Rec. Trail) to Burkhart Saddle (16.7 miles) Somewhere en-route the Manzanita Trail turns into the Burkhart Trail

(1B) ISLIP SADDLE: South Fork Trail (5.2 miles) to Burkhart/Manzanita Trail (High Desert Trail) @ South Fork. Burkhart/Manzanita Trail (High Desert Trail) to Burkhart Saddle (11.4 miles)

(2) BURKHART SADDLE: Abandoned trail contours around southwest flank of Will Thrall Peak and up to summit ridge of Pleasant View Ridge. (~1.5 miles)

(3) PLEASANT VIEW RIDGE: ~ 4.5 miles of cross country ridge walk to FS road 4N15. 4N15 south (~ 1mile) to Little Rock Canyon RD (5N04) According to a local trail angel, this ridge is easy to navigate with great views.

(4) LITTLE ROCK CANYON RD (5N04): ~5 miles northwest to intersection with old OHV RD just south of Little Rock Reservoir. ~3 miles southwest on old OHV RD to 4N20. 4N20 ~ 2.75 miles west to Angeles Forest HWY.

(5) ANGELES FOREST HWY: ~1mile north to 4N24. 4N24 ~2.5 miles west to Aliso Canyon Road. Aliso Canyon RD ~.1mile north to 4N32. 4N32 west ~ 3.5 miles to 4N33. 4N33 ~.5 mile north to Soledad Canyon RD.

(6) SOLEDAD CANYON RD: ~4.25 miles west to PCT.

*Total Approx. Distance for Detour (both routes): 42 miles
*PCT mileage: Vincent Gap to Soledad Canyon: 70.2 miles

Notes: Mileages are estimates except on established trails. This route stays clear of the Station Fire burn for its entire length. Use good maps & compass or GPS. Water might be an issue along segments of the route. Travel at your own risk… You are completely responsible for your own safety… If you die, you can’t sue me because you’re already dead… etc.

Happy Trails!
