A friend and I would like to spend a week hiking in Maine on the trail going through Mahoosuc Notch. We are coming from Michigan. Is there some secret to getting picked up or dropped off at a certain spot so we can hike a week to our car? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Call “The Cabin” in Maine hostel or visit <www.thecabininmaine.com> . Talk to Honey or Bear. Great folks. They are listed in the “Companion” as are some other places in Andover. I do know that Bear does shuttles. He can also tell you your car will be safe, etc.

Just wait until you see the wild and beautiful country in Maine! Cheers :happy

Don’t know why the link didn’t come through. I’ll try again. www.thecabininmaine.com . We shall see. Hmmm… are you sure you still want to go since you can’t call yourself a “Thru Hiker”…sheesh!!!

Thanks for directing me to “the Cabin”. Exactly what I was looking for. As far as Leslie’s posting goes, maybe it’s a little spring fever that is hitting all of us. Anyway, titles don’t really make much difference to me. The interaction we have with the woods is our own, different from eveyone elses’ no matter if we are day hikers, section hikers, or attempting the whole trail in one walk.

Those that are lucky enough to have the opportunity to through hike will have a lifetime of memories, but so will I. For the time being, my time in the woods helps me be a better mother to my little boy, a more loving wife, and a better teacher.

Back to the original posting, I am an information fanatic and any other ideas from those of you in the community will still be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

saw your post Lady-Di and wanted to say hello and wahoooooo for you in needing 300 miles in completing the AT !!!

For the rest of you there are those of us—like me—who will never complete the AT, our bodies are falling apart, but try we will knowing the coveted title will never be ours. It doesnt stop me from eeeeking out another section though no matter how much it hurts, no matter the fear of what bodily will break this time.
There is a title for us though, its eternal hikers, never quite getting there, sometimes hiking the same section over and over and over again, often exposing the ‘sport’ to newbies, maybe just for a place TO hike.

eclecticliz. I have been section hiking on the AT for the past 10 years. You can schedule a shuttle on every section of the AT from Georgia to Maine. There are usually several options of shuttles for you, anywhere you want to go. Go to the Appalachian Trail Conference web site, they have a section on shuttles with telephone numbers. I usually park my car at the destination that I want to reach and catch a shuttle to the starting point. That way when Iam finished with the hike, my car will be there waiting for me. You will not need to wait for a shuttle to take you back to where you started, and no body has to smell you. You need to remember to park your car in a safe spot. I’m also in education, please email me and we can talk.
