Sectional suggestions

I would like to plan a sectional hike this August for about a week. I live in the NYC area, any suggestions for a good portion to aim for? This would be my first long hike. I plan on doing this once or twice each year until I reach my daughter’s HS graduation in about 9 years when I plan to do a thruhike. Any suggestions are more than welcome!

Easier than some sections, the low mountains and river walks as you enter New England are nice, warm in August. Ever visit Harriman State Park in N.Y?..but ofcoarse, there’s no place like the White Mountains to really feel the trail…good luck!

KV, the greatest section hike of all time is just a bus ride away. Catch a bus up to the Delaware River Gap.

Spend the night at the Church of the Mountain, Hiker Center. A beautiful little town to get started in, a very nice hostel. First night is free, but give a donation anyway.

  1. A beautiful hike out of the DWG, pass Sunfish Pond and a short hike to the Mohican Outdoor Center, NJ. Spend the night there for free at a tent site. 10 mile hike.
  2. Hike to Brink Road Shelter. 13 miles.
  3. Mashipacong Shelter. 12 miles.
  4. Pochuck Mtn. Shelter. 20 miles, perhaps too long?
  5. Wawayanda Shelter. 11 miles.
  6. Wildcat Shelter NY. 12 miles.
  7. Fingerboard Shelter. 14 miles. Great old stone shelter.
  8. Fort Montgomery, Bear Mountain Bridge. 14 miles.

A more beautiful hike would be hard to find in one week. It’s close to home. You can catch a bus out of Ft. Montgomery to get home. Stay at the Bear Mountain Bridge Motel for an enjoyable evening, walk across the street for a beer and barbecue. Harriman State Park is where the AT was planned out and first trail was laid down.

I was so surprised to see just how beautiful that portion of the trail was. I could not agree more with Bilko, a great suggestion. Plus in August, the humidity may be high but, your not that high up in elevation so the chances of some views are good.

You may even be able to pick some Blueberries along the way.

Have fun, Peace

I am also planning on a 40-50 mile section. Hoping to do somewhere between northern PA and VT. I remember Delaware Water Gap being beautiful (also had my best bear-sighting there!), and remember Harriman State Park being great also. I just don’t remember what the sections were like between the two or on either end of them.

Anyone have a good recommendation for a section, possibly around those areas??
