Hi!
Looking for a section hike / backpacking partner(s) in New York for 5-6 days on the Appalachian Trail (which is close by) beginning Saturday, August 31st. My mom is freaking out about me doing this alone, so looking for a cool person/persons to join in the fun!
I plan to start near Pawling, NY and hike southbound to Greenwood Lake at the NY/NJ border. I’m renting a car with a friend to get up there and we’d take a New Jersey Transit bus back to NYC once complete. Also, if for any reason the hike gets to be too much and you need to end it early, there are several other towns on the way where there is access to public transportation to get back to NYC (for example, there’s a bus at Bear Mountain and a train at Peekskill).
Total hike is 76.9 miles. I’ve selected 2 possible timetables. One where we hike longer days and finish early, the other where we hike shorter distances each day and therefore finish a day later.
Option # 1 has us starting Saturday and finishing Wednesday night (averaging 15.4 miles/day).
Option # 2 has us starting Saturday and finishing Thursday night (averaging 11.9 miles/day). I prefer this option because I want to enjoy the hike, take in some sights, and not put too much stress on my body each day
About me: 30 year old in a committed relationship. I am gay but “straight acting”, so if that for any reason bothers you, its a deal-breaker. I’m pretty fun to be around, enjoy spending time with my dogs, and I’m a manager in the healthcare field. Looking to get out of the city, would love to get some reading done. I was in the army for years, so I’m used to walking long distances, even though I now have a couple of extra lbs on me these days.
You: Male or female, have backpacking gear and general knowledge of the A.T. Have a good attitude on life! Have a sense of humor! Be okay with both having conversations along the way as well as being content with silence and not needing to be constantly entertained by your hiking buddy. Prefer you be within 10 or so years around my age. Must have own tent. I have a 2 person tent but prefer to sleep alone. I’m a laid-back guy, seeking like minded individuals.
