Seeking shelter pictures

For fun, I am looking at creating a directory of shelters including pictures and other fun facts. I have a number from my 2002 thru hike and other AT adventures but need many, many more. Please send me your pictures of AT shelters with any relavent comments. To see my initial efforts go to www.katahidinadvisors.com/at and at the bottom click on Index of AT shelters. Send submissions to atsteamboat@yahoo.com. If you would like attribution, say so and I will do so.

This is something Leif and I wanted to do for a few years but never had the time. I created a list of the shelters but need to get them linked up with the photos.

We should work together to get a photo list up. I’ll look for my old pages and shoot you an email once I get them working.

runjim. Thanks for pointing out the link typo. I am sure I will have others. Nooga (thanks for the pics, they are up) already caught a mistake on a shelter name. Please if you see any other errors let me know.

One warning, my web-hosting company (Featureprice.com) has been acting a little fishy. Rumors of going bankrupt. Latest symptom is telling me I have used all my space when plenty is left. As a result, it may take some time to get some of the submissions up. We’ll get there one way or another however.

My original idea was to create a photo book of all the AT shelters once I had hiked the whole AT, unless someone else published one before then. I even discussed it with Bob Peoples at Kincora when I was there, and he suggested perhaps making postcard sets of the shelters to sell.I was thinking i’d go back to each shelter from nearest road crossing after I retired, with a GOOD camera, and photograph each one for the book. PERHAPS this idea could be brought to fruition in another way…could we create the book and/or the postcard sets, under supervision of Leif/Zip and sell them to provide $$$ for the benefit of this website?

You might also ask for photos of shelters no longer used. For instance, False Gap shelter in the Smokies. It used to be between Charlies Bunion and Pecks Corner, about 0.2 mi. W of the trail. There are many more. It would be good to have an archive. I wonder if the ATC or local trail clubs have photos of current and/or abandoned shelters?

False Gap shelter is still indicated on the Topozone.com Mt. Guyot 1:25,000 quad. Do search for False Gap in TN, if interested.
