Seg 1 - 6 in July, some q's

I’ve been reading the forums with great interest the last couple days as I’m putting the final touches on my plan for fastpacking segments 1 to 6 starting early July. I have a few questions I’m hoping to have answered.

  1. Mosquitoes and flies; how bad are they on these segments at this time of year? I was just in the Bighorn mountains for a trail race and over the course of 30 or so hours above 4500’ I only saw a couple of each. There was quite a bit of standing water in places (which in my home on the prairies is a breeding ground for mosquitoes, and we have tons every year). My main concern is in regard to my sleeping situation. Will I need my full bug mesh tent or can I get away with just the fly and a groundsheet and a liberal dose of repellant?

  2. Snow in segment 6. I just read that it is pretty nasty, but is there a chance it could be melted down to passable in two weeks? I’m not opposed to bringing my snowshoes; I am Canadian

  3. If the snow is not passable in seg 6, what are some options to get to civilization at the end of seg 5 where I could get a bus/shuttle back to Denver? Is there much at Jefferson just south on 285?

  4. Are there any public transit options to get one to the alternate start points for segment 1? Or where would the end of the ‘line’ be for buses that would make for the cheapest possible cab fare? if they’ll go to the Roxborough park that is. I’m flying into Denver in the morning, dropping some post hike gear off downtown, grabbing some last minute supplies then hitting the trail as soon as possible.

Thanks for any help/insights you can offer,
D
