Re-started the trail after more than a couple days of bad weather. Started at Seg.10 out of Leadville, good hiking. I only came across some snow fields, only had to post hole up to my knees in spots, not bad at all. The patches of snow covered the trail in places but if you looked around you could pretty easily find the trail again on the ground spots. There was only a couple miles of this snowness so it only slowed you down a little bit.
Segment 11 was free and clear of snow, I met some rangers who were actively working on better signage and improving the trail. There were a couple places I got confused but I just kept heading in the general direction and kept my land marks about me and eventually met up with the trail again.
Are boys afraid of sleeping in the dark in the woods?
Because sometimes I feel really girlie as I can’t close my eyes and relax at night.I usually nap for an hour at a time, I have my dog and she is in charge of security so if she barks at something I’m wide awake in a minute and grab for my headlamp ready to meet the bear. I really don’t get a peaceful restful sleep at night and of course the next day is the law of diminishing return and I just drive myself into the ground slowly by hiking hard and sleeping light. This is one of the problems I’ve encountered hiking alone. That the the knowledge that anything can happen and I am in charge of nothing, not weather, not terrain, not much at all. Solo hiking early I barely see a soul a day, usually by trailheads I see people but it’s pretty desolate people wise. In fact on the rare occasion I come across a person or a biker comes up on me it usually scares me out of my skin. But I think as hiking season actually starts there will be more people out there. Hiking alone is great but it’s nice to have company sometimes too. Enjoy whatever you do.
