Seg 14 conditions

This weekend we hiked segment 14 from HW 50 to Angel of Shavano campground and spent the night.

I called the ranger station before and they said there would be an obstacle course of blown down trees. Apparently someone went through and cut them all. I was amazed at how much work was done. The trail was completely clear. Thanks for the hard work.

There was no snow except for a few small patches in the woods. Nothing on the trail.
The temperature at night was below freezing. I don’t have a thermometer, but our water bottle were about half frozen.

Just finished some trails to the north. There is some snow north of Twin Lakes, but nothing to stop you. Biggest area is drooping down to the Mt Elbert TH.

Hoping to do Seg 7 in Mid-June. Anyone been up there yet? I know it’s early but it seems to be a dry, warm year. Thanks.

georgia pass and 10 mile range (as of april 30th 2012) have the same snow pack as about may 25ish 2010. By my estimation based on viewing the modeled changes in snowmelt during may 2010, both will be passable around late may.

This is all assuming the rate of snow melt and snowfall are the same this upcoming month as they were in 2010. Wouldn’t plan anything around those two assumptions

Thanks Andrew, the comparison to 2010 is very valuable. I live in Boulder so I can keep an eye on current conditions.

Andrew, by combining the NOAA snow depth Goggle earth info with the Goggle earth CT map on the CT website, I could get the actual snow depth on the individual trail segment. Th
anks so much for the lead.

Interesting, how do you export the snow depth overlay to google earth?

Does this mean that Segment 7 should be open by the first week in June? We would like to get over it then if possible.

If all goes according to plan I personally will be crossing Segment 7 on Friday June 8th.
