Segment 24 - Trail Conditions

Just returned from hiking Segment 24 from Stony Pass to Molas Pass. Still a fair amount of snow along the Continental Divide south of Stony Pass. The trail is passable. Was told in Durango that Winter didn’t let up its grip on the San Juans, north of Segment 27 until a couple of weeks ago. Pretty much mud season up there with snow, slush, mud, squishy tundra, etc. The snow was able to support my weight early in the day, but post-holed up to my knee later in the morning. Also snow in the upper part of the Elk Creek drainage. About a dozen downed trees along the Elk Creek Trail. A northbound CT thru-hiker mentioned he was thankful to tag along with a group to navigate through the snow on Blackhawk and Bolam Passes, post-holing up to his hip in spots. With temperatures warming up, snow should not be an issue in the next week or two. Was pleasantly surprised to see so many wildflowers this early in the season!
