Sending digital photos home? Most successful

Trying to decide by which method it makes more sense to send photos and video home with out spending a fortune in memory cards. Ive heard of portable cD burners which can be sent along in your bounce box. Just burn the memory and free your cards back up. Id like to just go to town and burn them at a walmart or something but I know there are not as many town stops as on the PCT as on the AT. Another idea is to send my memory cards home then have the mailed back in rotation but that could certainly cause me to run into a problem or two. Any other ideas or suggestions?..

I rotated three small cards 1 gig, 1 gig, 2gig, took the 2 gig for the Sierras. - 2300 photos, pretty good quality, videos. I had them transfered to computer then mailed back, and carried whatever extra cards I had. I think I could have rotated with two just fine.

I didn’t have a bounce box, just a helpful home base camp crew… I imagine bouncing a burner would be a bit of a pain.

If you have a data cable, you might be able to burn CDs directly off the card along the way.

You have basically 2 choices. Bouncing a laptop or somesort of burner that you can copy the files off your memory cards in town. Or sending a card home every 2 weeks to someone who can copy the contents and then mail the card back to you further up the trail while you use another card in its place. You probably would need 3-4 cards large enough to hold at least two weeks worth of photos. If you have bigger cards then you don’t have to send them home as often.

In most decent size towns you could get the Memory card burnt onto a CD at a drug store like Rite Aid, or at any photo shop along the way. Definetely in Idylwild, Big Bear, Agua Dulce(on the trip to REI, or perhaps at the Sauffleys), Mojave?, Bishop, Mammoth Lakes(machine broken the one time I wanted it at Rite Aid), South Lake, Etna, burney, Ashland, Cascade Locks( or the much bigger town across the Columbia).

You could also ask a local where ever you are To use their computer to do this.

We had three or four 1Gig cards and didn’t have a problem, but we didn’t use the video option on the cam often at all. Plus 5 megapixel allowed for more shots.

Perhaps you could get a grip of cards on E-bay for cheap. Bouncing seems cool and all, but I imagine that all that postage would add up to quite a bit, plus electronic gear might die in repeated mailing. :nerd

There are a number of devices that are essentially a hard drive with a card slot. You hit a button to download the card to the drive… some of these devices are fancy an include LCD panels, some don’t…

If it was me, I’d do some combination of using such a device for backup, along with just having a bunch of memory cards. Memory cards are cheap these days, and if you really want to recover costs, you can get some money back by selling the extras on ebay or craigslist when you finish your hike.

Canister vs White Gas vs Alcohol?
Now, I know most people are going to reply “Alcohol”, but IF I were to go with an MSR pocket rocket (what I used on the AT), can I find isobutane canisters in towns along the PCT?
