I'm a high schooler and have been thinking about my senior project. I really don't know exactly what I have to do for it but would love for it to involve hiking/backpacking. Could I hike the AT (or part of it since I probably would not have enough time over the summer to do the whole thing) for my project? Any thoughts?

Sounds like a cool idea. While you might not be able to fit a thruhike into your summer, you certainly have time enough to do a long section hike. I guess the first thing to you need to do is narrow your topic. Here is a partial list of broad topics you might want to explore:
- geology
- flora
- fauna
- water quality
- hiking ethics / leave no trace
- trail management
- hiker culture
- history
- impact of the trail on local communities
Once you have decided on a general topic you can narrow your focus to something more manageable. Maybe even a journal documenting your hike might be project enough. I wish you the best with your hike.

In '97, I hiked for 6 weeks on the Appalachian Trail for my senior project. I went to high school in Connecticut. My school had a laundry list of rules for senior projects, but I don't remember them and no one but you knows anything about your senior project. I made it from Springer Mt. to Damascus. I took a ton of photos, kept a journal, and created a photo journal. If you have any questions, email me. Pack light. Good luck!
