Sept. Hike - The Colorado Trail

Hi all; I’m having difficulty finding a stretch of time to hike this summer and am curious about weather conditions if I hike from Waterton south for a 100 miles or so starting in early September. I know conditions aren’t always easy to predict, but in general what’s it like there in beautiful Colorado that time of year?

I consider the third week of September to be the best fall colors time. The climate is good at that time, but the weather can be hard winter.

If it were me I would ride the Black Hills stage to Kenosha Pass and start at Segment 6. 138 miles later take a dip in Princeton Hot Springs and ride the Black Hills Stage back to Denver.

September is my favorite time to be outdoors in Colorado, but you can expect freezing or below at night and possibly snow. It could always snow heavy in Sept at elevation. If you started in Durango you’d get to see the best part of the trail (the san juans) first.
