Shelter help needed

Hi, I was wondering what is the status of the mosquitoes around the Smoky Mountains at this time of year. I’m going to hike there in about 2-3 weeks and cant make up my mind of whether to take a tarp or a tent. I would like to take a tarp but if the mosquitoes are unbearable then I will have to suffer the load of a tent. Can anybody help me with this dilemma. Thanks.

it’ll keep almost forever and it’s very light. 2 lbs.
A sererate tarp and ground sheet are the same weight.

Hey!!!
Used to live right by the Cosby area. Hiked there a lot. Question–are you hiking the AT? If yes, probably no need for excessive worry regarding mosquitoes. Very little standing water. Take a tent–probably won’t need it–will sleep in shelters. (You need reservations–make 'em early, the shelters fill up!) If you’re not on the AT (my favorite hikes in Smokies are off the AT) you’re gonna be on trails near streams and shared by horses. In any case–the Smokies are rainy enough for me to prefer a tent.
Enjoy!!! I wish I was going with ya.

I’m in Atlanta and no bugs have hatched yet as we have had a relatively cool spring in the South this year. The Smokies are at least two weeks behind Atlanta in terms of weather so you should have no problems of any significant concern!

Enjoy-

I just came through the Great Smoky Mountains about a week ago. No mosquitoes, but some gnats/noseeums. I used shelters all but one night. I carried a tent.

Bullwinkle, you said that you have hiked around the smokies, right? Any suggested hikes? I’ve only driven and dayhiked there but this time I am planning on taking a few weeks hiking through the Smokies. Part of my trip I am going to hike the AT and the other part I will take on the trails around the area. This is my training for a future entire AT or PCT attempt. Thanks for the help guys! I appreciate it.
