Does anyone know how long it takes to hike from the parking lot at the Shining Rock Wilderness Area of Pisgah to the rock. I am thinking of gboing in a few weeks for a short overnight or two.

Are you talking about the Black Balsalm Parking lot off the Blue Ridge Parkway?

It should be gorgeous this time of year, as the blueberry balds redden up in advance of the trees.

You should hike up from Davidson River Campground on the Art Loeb Trail. Great/Steep hike. I believe that was around 8 miles. If you have a couple days, do the whole trail. Around 30 miles.

I was there in June and it took about 2 hours to get to the top. There is a parking lot right at the bottom of it near the fish hatery. There are camping areas at the top also. Have fun

from the parking lot there is a side trail that will take
yu up to the top of black balsam so that yu can hike across
the balds, i.e. the art loeb trail. the side trail is faint
but its on the right of the rocky road just as yu get started. wear a hat not any shade.

It maybe around an 1- 1 1/2 hours from the parking lot, over the balds to Ivestor Gap. It’s then less than an hour to Shining rock from there. Of course, you can take the lower way which is much easier. I suggest taking the high (easterly) route there (don’t miss it!), and the low, very flat route back. Don’t miss Sam Knob and Flat Laurel Creek too. You could make a great 2 night trip by hiking to Shining Rock Gap or Flower Gap to camp, then hike over to Flat Laurel Creek for night two and climb Sam Knob from that camp. Awesome area… I wish I could go! Have fun!
