I’m not from VA and I don’t have a map in front of me, but from when I hiked through Pearisburg, it seemed that Blacksburg is the place to go. I might be talking non-sense so don’t take my word for it.

Two years ago there was a funny old guy named Melvin in a gray car that shuttled hikers wherever they needed to go for a small donation. He may still be around. Strange guy but harmless. He met me at the trail head as I came into town looking for hikers to drive around.

Yeah, Melvin. He’s got a wooden toy with a string, that when you pull on the string, two wooden miniature people make like they are having sex. He’s a dirty old man that will make passes at you if you are female, but you can just tell him to give it up and he’ll behave.

2 years ago,Melvin did drive folks around town but is not really into leaving the area around Pearisburg. The caretaker of Holy Family Hostle,Bill Guetter, will shuttle for about $1.oo per mi ea and every mi.(2002)Hitchhiking is difficult here. I finished a long southbound section hike in Pearisburg(2002) and got a ride down to Damascus with some thruhikers who rented a car in Pearisburg to shuttle folks down to TrailDays.Car rental is avail in Pearisburg and inexpensive. Also, this time of year, people leave their cars at the Holy Family Hostle and you may be able to work some transportation out with them. It has been years since public transport. has stopped in Pearisburg. Maybe someone in the area will start a shuttle service(donation based)Happy Trails and positive thoughts about some of the logistics. One last thought, the southern trailhead of the Allegheny trail is just north of Pearisburg on Peters Mountain. This last section of the Allegheny Trail(20 mi) is uncompleted and hikers require a shuttle. Contact the Allegheny Trail Association and they may be able to connect you. 2 Spirits
