I plan a thru hike on the JMT mid to late August 2014. I have 17 days to get this done to include driving from and back to Minnesota. I anticipate 10-12 days on the trail and will be starting from WP. What advice do you have for leaving the car at Yosemite Valley and shuttling to WP for the start…quickly? Thanks!

You can easily catch YARTS bus from Yosemite Valley or Tuolumne Meadows and ride it down to either Lee Vining or Mammoth Lakes. From Lee Vining or Mammoth Lakes you can catch the ESTA bus to Lone Pine. From Lone Pine you’ll probably either have to hitch up to Whitney Portal or pay someone for a ride, but either way shouldn’t be too hard. There’s a lot of people going up there that time of year. Plan on the trip from Yosemite to WP taking up a full day. And make sure you check the schedules thoroughly, especially ESTA. It might not run every day of the week.
