What's the going rate for shuttles around SW VA these days? May be able to provide some services and do not want to undercut others providing shuttle services and also do not want to overcharge. Thanks. Shady

Not sure what shuttle rates are, but I just got a quote for a taxi to take me from Bristol Tn to Hampton, Tn -- about 30 miles, for $100. How far south in Va are you likely to operate?

Since I live near the Atkins crossing, I will probably limit most of my shuttles between Pearisburg and Damascus. I do not know who else in the area offers shuttle service but hope to find out so we can coordinate our efforts at times. I am just starting this effort and plan to do some extended hiking trips of my own on the northern section of the Trail this summer, so my availability will be limited over the summer months. E-mail with particulars and we can talk. Godspeed! Shady

Shady, call some of the local shuttle drivers and ask them how much they charge to take you from point to point. Cost depends of course on cost of fuel, how many people going, distance, distance from shuttle drivers location, time of day, etc. When I first started using shuttles it was usually a dollar per mile, when gas prices when up it went to 2 dollars per mile. You can find local shuttle drivers by going to the ATC website, there is a list of ATC drivers in your area. I actually caught a shuttle from Blacksburg to the AT, the person shuttling did it for free. But shuttle drivers will usually give hikers the number of some one else if they can't shuttle. You can also go to your local Hiking Club and let them know you will shuttle.
