My son and I want to section hike from Damascus to Pearisburg in June and I was hoping someone could give me advise on a relievable location to leave my car and for someone to shuttle use to and from the trail. I have the AT Shuttles and Public Transportation List but getting advise would help. I was hoping to leave my car in the Atkins, Va. areas. Any advice would be appreciated.

I left my car at the Relax Inn in Atkins and did not have any issues. He only charges $5 for parking (for the entire week) and was a reliable shuttle.

This is the first hike I ever did on the AT and caused me to promise myself I’d hike the AT at least once a year every year till I died. So far I’ve been able to do that. I drove from Ohio and stayed the night in the Mt.Rogers Outfitters parking lot where the next morning they shuttled me north. Thes guys gave me lots of helpful hints. They’re on the net or I can give you their info. Of course this is an opposite trek from yours but I would recommend it or at least have them shuttle you to Atkins and walk back to your car in Damascus. You can’t miss spending time in Damascus…it’s the Mecca for hikers. Happy Hiking:cheers

I sectioned through that area last year and Bill Gautier (the caretaker at the Holy Family Hostel in Pearisburg) took care of all my shuttling needs. Although I didn’t actually park at the hostel - I parked at Wade’s Market right next to the AT - the parking lot at the church and hostel is usually nearly empty.

I’ll be having him shuttle me north of P’burg next week.
